"While the Earth remains, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall not cease." Genesis 8:22

John Dominie Crosssan in his book, "In Parables" talks about the story of the sower and the seed, some that fell on rocky ground, some that produced grain. He makes an interesting point: It was not the biological realities of seed time and harvest, not the natural processes of growth to which our Lord was alluding. Rather, the emphasis goes back to an Old Testament understanding that seed time and its harvest were a miraculous gift of God. And as long as the earth remained, these things would be. For that is who God is, and what God is about. It is His very nature to give gifts to men, whether is it seed time and harvest or whether it be the promises of the Kingdom. It is not out of our goodness, or the faithfulness even of our toil, but out of the gracious bounty of God's love that we receive his gifts of love and mercy and grace.

Today, be aware of the gifts you receive, and give thanks to God who gives you all of them. Amen.
