7. Moving Beyond Survival to Meaning

Victor Frankl in his book, "Man's Search Fro Meaning" recounts the days he lived through the agony of the concentration camps during World War II. Many times he found his life near despair as the very struggle to survive was even questionable. He indicates that he was sustained not by the desire to survive, but by the love he had for us wife - who represented life and meaning to him.

Sometimes we think of survival itself as being all important. Certainly, any emotionally healthy person wants to live! But life is made up of more than survival. It must be filled with meaning. Even in the Church, sometimes the concern about economic survival takes precedence over the meaning the church has for being here.

To speak of meaning is to speak of all those areas which have been suggested these past few days. It is meaningful to have a purpose, to be a servant of God, to be nurtured in the faith, to be committed and to be filled with faith. Even to reflect on the richness of such a life is to know that each day means a great deal because it means that one lives in fellowship with God and in the Lord's service. Thanks be to God. Amen.
